Certain bags of Gold Medal brand flour are being recalled due to the potential presence of salmonella.

Certain bags of Gold Medal brand flour are under voluntary national recall due to potential salmonella contamination, the state Department of Health Food and Drug Branch warned Hawaii residents Tuesday.

General Mills has recalled five- and 10-pound pages of Gold Medal unbleached all-purpose flour as well as two- and five-pound bags of Gold Medal bleached all-purpose flour with a “better if used by” date of March 27 and 28, 2024.

All other types of Gold Medal flour are unaffected by the recall.

The voluntary recall includes the following code dates:

Residents should check their pantries and throw away any product affected by this recall, DOH said. Consumers who have had to discard products covered by the recall may contact General Mills Consumer Relations at (800) 230-8103.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advise against consuming raw products made with flour. Salmonella infantis is killed by heat through baking, frying, sauteing or boiling products made with flour. All surfaces, hands and utensils should be properly cleaned after contact with flour or dough.

Healthy persons infected with Salmonella infantis, a bacteria, often experience nausea, diarrhea, fever and abdominal pains, according to DOH. Typically, symptoms start within six hours to six days after infection and last four to seven days. Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a physician.
