23-year-old man killed near CCC bridge identified

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Authorities have identified a 23-year-old man who was fatally shot near the Crescent City Connection bridge.

According to the New Orleans Police Department, the victim was shot at least once “possibly on the CCC” and taken to a hospital around 12:44 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22. The NOPD initially said the victim died from his injuries, but at 4:35 p.m. corrected itself to say he was in “grave condition.”

On Friday (Feb. 23) morning, police said the victim had died.

On Monday, the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Giovanne Coleman.

Police say Coleman was a passenger in a vehicle driving on the interstate when an unknown number of suspects in a sedan drove up and fired an unknown number of gunshots. He was driven to a hospital and then transported to a second hospital where he died from his injuries. Two other people in the vehicle with the victim were uninjured.

Investigators believe the shooting happened on US 90 W just past the Tchoupitoulas Street exit ramp.

The westbound lanes of the bridge from the St. Charles Avenue exit ramp were shut down for two hours Thursday between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m.
